Call Before You Dig

Florida law says call before you dig

Florida law requires excavators to call before digging so that utility companies can mark underground lines. Digging without marked utility lines is dangerous. A cut utility line could cause a complete disruption in utility facilities such as cable, gas and telephone, until repairs can be made. Further, it jeopardizes the safety of those excavating.

Excavators are required by law to contact Sunshine State One Call of Florida (SSOCOF) at 1-800-432-4770. SSOCOF will contact all utility facilities located near their planned dig area.

After receiving a locate ticket from SSOCOF, the facility companies have two business days to contact the excavator with one of two options.

  1. Call the excavator with an all clear if there are no underground facilities at the construction site.
  2. Physically mark the site according to a color code established by the American Public Works Association.
