New advertising promotes Tampa Electric’s money-saving programs and rebates
Free programs like Energy Planner help computer-savvy customers save energy and money
TAMPA, November 5, 2013
Tampa Electric has launched a new advertising campaign consisting of television and radio commercials, print advertising and Internet banners to promote the company’s many energy-saving programs and rebates.
The new ads feature family-friendly animated characters, such as a computer named Barney that tells customers how they can use their own computer to program their thermostat and some appliances while away from home. In another commercial to be aired later this month, a talking house – that’s not feeling well – suggests calling Tampa Electric to schedule a free Home Energy Audit.
“We want more of our customers to participate in the nearly 40 energy-saving programs we offer – more than any other investor-owned utility in Florida,” said Bruce Narzissenfeld, vice president of Marketing, Customer Service, Business Development and Fuel Operations for Tampa Electric and Peoples Gas. “Although our electric rates are among the lowest in the country, we’re focused on providing our customers with solutions that add value.”

The company continues to enhance its free Energy Planner program that puts customers in control of their energy usage by letting them determine how much they will ultimately save. Energy Planner offers lower rates 87 percent of the time, including all weekends and major holidays. Customers are able to save on electricity costs by shifting their usage to the time of day when rates are at their lowest levels. Recent updates to the program allow customers to program their thermostat and select appliances over the Internet. Unlike some load-management programs offered by other utilities, Energy Planner is an interactive energy-management system that puts customers in control.
Tampa Electric began its conservation program rebates in the late 1970s, before any federal or state energy conservation requirements. From 1979 through 2012, Tampa Electric performed more than 416,500 energy audits and paid almost 426,000 rebates to customers who have participated in Tampa Electric’s energy-efficiency programs – offsetting the need to generate enough electricity to serve more than 780,000 average-size homes over a 12-month period.
Tampa Electric Company is the principal subsidiary of TECO Energy Inc. (NYSE: TE), an energy-related holding company with regulated utility operations in Florida, including both Tampa Electric and Peoples Gas System . Tampa Electric serves more than 687,000 customers in West Central Florida. TECO Energy’s other major subsidiary, TECO Coal, owns and operates coal-production facilities in Kentucky and Virginia.
