Tampa Electric customers quickly snap up more than $1 million in solar rebates
Company has paid $4.1 million to customers for new solar installations since April 2011
TAMPA, January 6, 2015
Within seconds today, Tampa Electric customers claimed more than $1.1 million in rebates to help fund the installation of new solar photovoltaic (PV) systems at homes and businesses in 2015.
The company began accepting reservations online at tampaelectric.com/solarrebates at 10 a.m. today.
Although all PV rebates have been claimed, solar water heater rebates are still available on a first-come, first-served basis to residential customers planning to install new solar water heater equipment (up to $1,000 per installation).
Today’s release of rebate funds marks the final year of the company’s solar pilot program. During the first four years, Tampa Electric has distributed nearly $4.1 million in solar PV rebates.
“The solar pilot program has been a huge success,” said Shelly Aubuchon, program manager for Tampa Electric’s Renewable Energy programs. “The intent of the rebate pilot was to encourage our customers to install solar and help offset a portion of the costs. Since the pilot began almost five years ago, the cost for solar has decreased steadily to a level that’s making it affordable to many customers, even without the assistance of rebate funds.”
Customers with solar can earn a retail credit for excess electricity generated by their PV systems. To date, the company has more than 550 customers with PV arrays connected to Tampa Electric’s grid through net metering, resulting in a combined capacity of almost 8 megawatts. The number of customers installing PV is expected to double over the next five years even without the rebates.
