Customer Installed Systems

Customer installed solar panels let you power your home or business with clean, renewable energy generated from the sun. After you complete a certified installation (also referred to as a photovoltaic or PV system), Tampa Electric will interconnect your system to the grid and install a bi-directional net meter. Tampa Electric also provides interconnection and net metering to wind-powered, biomass, or other renewable generating systems as defined by Florida Statutes 366.91(2) and 336.92(2).

Tampa Electric will install, own and maintain the net metering equipment used to measure excess kilowatt-hours of electricity produced by your system. With net metering, excess electricity will be delivered to Tampa Electric’s grid, and in return, you will receive a credit based on your current retail energy rate. Learn more by downloading the Florida Public Service Commission’s Rule 25-6.065.

How will net metering affect my electric bill?

If your home or business has a net meter, an additional line item called “In Flat” will appear on your statement. This displays the amount of electricity in kilowatt-hours (kWh) your renewable generating system delivered to Tampa Electric’s grid throughout one billing cycle. Download this sample bill to see how this will appear and to learn more. This guide to meter displays will help you identify the various readings that will appear on your net meter.

Solar CalculatorHow much will it cost to install a solar system?

Our solar calculator was developed to give you an approximate cost to install a solar panel system on your home or business. In addition, it will provide the energy savings that you can expect as a result of your investment. Simply enter the size of the system you want to install (in kilowatts - kW). Solar systems average 5 kilowatts (kW) for a home and 25 kW for a business.

Getting started is easy – just follow these steps:

Step 1
Complete and submit an application.

Step 2
Download and complete an interconnection agreement by select the bar below that matches the rating of your renewable generating system. Additional documentation may be required based on the size of your system. Please note: This rating is measured in alternating current (AC).

Systems rated 10kW or less (AC) [-]
  • Tier 1 interconnection agreement for systems 10kW or less:
  • No application fee.
  • Provide a copy the manufacturer's installation, operation and maintenance instructions for the system's inverter. A Web link is also acceptable.
  • A manual disconnect switch of visible load break type must be installed adjacent to meter, prior to inspection (Tampa Electric will reimburse customer for installation on systems 10 kW or less).
  • Proof of inspection and approval by local code authority.

Systems rated greater than 10 kW to 100kW (AC) [-]
  • Tier 2 interconnection agreement for systems greater than 10kW to 100kW:
  • Application fee: $250.
  • Proof of insurance not less than $1,000,000 general liability (see condition #9).
  • Provide a copy the manufacturer's installation, operation and maintenance instructions for the system's inverter. A Web link is also acceptable.
  • A manual disconnect switch of visible load break type must be installed adjacent to meter prior to inspection.
  • Proof of inspection and approval by local code authority.

Systems rated 100kW to 2MW (AC) [-]
  • Tier 3 interconnection agreement for systems greater than 100kW to 2MW:
  • Application fee: $500.
  • Proof of insurance not less than $2,000,000 general liability (see condition #9).
  • Provide a copy the manufacturer's installation, operation and maintenance instructions for the system's inverter. A Web link is also acceptable.
  • A manual disconnect switch of visible load break type must be installed adjacent to meter, prior to inspection.
  • Proof of inspection and approval by local code authority.
  • May require interconnection study (see condition #11).

Step 3
Mail your completed application, interconnection agreement and other required documentation to:

Attn: Renewable Energy Program, Plaza 5
Tampa Electric
P.O. Box 111
Tampa, FL 33601-0111

Upon receipt of required documentation, an inspection of your system will be scheduled by a Tampa Electric representative to ensure proper interconnection. If the installation passes inspection, Tampa Electric will replace your traditional meter with a net meter so you can begin operating your system.

To speak with a Tampa Electric representative regarding interconnection and net metering, call 813-228-4848.
