Tampa Electric partnered with the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission, and hosted the Raptor Electrocution Prevention Workshop, May 29-30, 2003, at TECO Plaza. The event was held to educate representatives from Florida power companies on protecting the state's birds of prey. Raptors are large birds such as hawks, Ospreys and bald eagles. Their size, nesting and perching habits make them prone to collisions and electrocution from transmission and distribution wires and towers.
In 1989, Tampa Electric responded to community concerns to preserve the natural habitat in the Cockroach Bay area, and in a first-of-its-kind action, placed the decision about where to build its power plant in the hands of the community.
