Highland Pines Lighting Project

Tampa Electric plans to begin work on two projects in the Highland Pines neighborhood. One project is a City of Tampa initiative to improve the lighting in your community. A second project is a Tampa Electric transmission pole replacement project which is part of our ongoing maintenance program.

As you will recall, the lighting project was started by the community requesting that the East Tampa CRA, through Tax Increment Financing (TIF), provide funding to upgrade existing lighting to address safety concerns and reduce crime for all residents. Highland Pines will be the first complete neighborhood that will receive replacement and upgrading of fixtures. The East Tampa CRA Community Advisory Committee appreciates your patience and looks forward to the results.

Tampa Electric and City of Tampa representatives will be available at a community meeting to provide detailed information about both of these projects and to answer your questions. We will have detailed maps, photos of existing and new poles, and displays of our construction plans available for your review.

The community meeting will be held:

Tuesday, February 22, 2011
6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
Highland Pines Community Center
4505 E. 21st Avenue
Tampa, FL 33605

Below is an overview of each project.

City of Tampa Lighting Project:

  • Upgrade some of the existing light fixtures and install nearly 100 additional light fixtures.
  • Install more than 150 100-watt lights.
  • Replace approximately 90 existing distribution poles with new poles that meet our current standards at or near the existing pole locations. The new poles will be slightly larger around at the ground and slightly taller than the poles being replaced.
  • The new poles will strengthen our electric system in the Highland Pines community.
  • The new lighting system in your neighborhood will meet Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IES) standards.
  • We expect to begin working on this project by the end of February and it will be completed by August 2011. Please see the attached map of the project area and photos of the existing and new poles.

Tampa Electric Transmission Maintenance Pole Replacement Project:

  • Replace 8 transmission poles along 21st Avenue from 39th Street to Cord Street at or near existing pole locations.
  • New poles will be approximately 75 feet tall and 24 inches wide at the ground.
  • New lights will be installed on approximately 6 of the new transmission poles as part of the City of Tampa lighting initiative to improve lighting in your neighborhood.
  • Please note that this transmission pole replacement project is not part of the City of Tampa lighting initiative.
  • Work will begin on this project the week of March 7 and it will be completed by the end of March. Please see the attached map that includes the transmission work area and photos of the existing and new poles.

To ensure adequate clearance for the new lights and poles, Tampa Electric and the City of Tampa will need to trim trees in the project area beginning in February 2011.
