Tampa Electric customers recently received a letter announcing that the company submitted an application to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) for the certification, construction and operation of a proposed 630-megawatt Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) plant, Polk Power Station Unit 6. This power plant project application also included construction of a 230-kilovolt transmission line from Polk County to the FishHawk substation in Hillsborough County.
On October 4, Tampa Electric announced a decision to meet its 2013 need for baseload generation without using IGCC technology and withdrew the Polk Unit 6 application previously submitted to the FDEP, including the transmission line project.
The new line was necessary to connect the generation produced by the proposed Polk Unit 6 to the state transmission grid. The line would also maintain the reliable flow of electricity across the state and maintain reliable service to all Tampa Electric customers.
Currently we are re-evaluating our baseload generation plans to include different technologies, fuels, and energy efficiency, conservation and renewable energy programs, and the corresponding transmission infrastructure required. We are committed to communicating with our customers in the future when our new plans are completed, approximately in the summer 2008 timeframe.
