Frequently Asked Question

Q. How do I protect a card-key controlled electric gate that is continually being damaged by surges?

A. Electric gate controllers are difficult to protect because of their distance from the house. Not only is there an electrical circuit providing power but also low-voltage control wiring, and possibly a telephone line for voice intercom. All are subject to damage from transient surges that may not enter through the home's electrical service entrance. If possible, install a plug-in surge strip with telephone line protection on the electronic and motor control power supply and have your gate repairman install low-voltage surge suppressors on the low-voltage control wiring. Low-voltage SPDs should be installed at both ends of the cables. Route underground power and control cables in separate metallic conduits.
