Frequently Asked Question

Q. Why do I need a primary unit at the meter? Can't I use plug-in surge protectors throughout my home?

A. Most plug-in protectors are not designed to handle the intensity of the lightning in the Tampa Bay area. Zap Cap's high capacity outside unit will suppress large surges and provide protection for the wiring and major appliances within the home, such as stoves, refrigerators, washers, dryers, air conditioners, etc. Because of its large capacity, it cannot suppress at a voltage level low enough to protect sensitive electronic items such as TV's, computers, microwaves and garage door openers. The individual plug-in surge protection device becomes the second layer of the two-layer system for surges that are transmitted down the power lines, as well as surges on telephone and cable lines.
