How to Reset Your Breakers

Before you reset your breaker, you need to know the types of breakers in your home:

The main breaker is a mechanical switch. It cuts off the flow of electricity to the branch breakers when an overload or short occurs.

Branch breakers are small circuit breakers that feed power to the individual circuits in your home, such as your air conditioner. They are found in the same panel as the main breaker or in a separate panel.

If electrical service to your home is interrupted, follow these steps:

  • First, reset the main breaker by flipping it firmly to the "OFF" position.
  • Next, turn the main breaker back to the "ON" position.
  • In many cases, this is all you'll need to do to restore power. However, if the main breaker trips again after it's reset, follow these steps:
    • Turn all the branch breakers to the "OFF" position.
    • Then, repeat the steps for resetting the main breaker.
    • After resetting the main breaker, turn the branch breakers on one at a time until power is restored

If resetting your breakers doesn't bring your power back, please give us a call. However, if your main breaker or a branch circuit breaker will not reset, you may need to contact a licensed electrician.
