Environmental Citizenship

At TECO Energy, we believe strongly in corporate environmental citizenship—the idea that we—as a company and as individual men and women—are connected to the larger ecosystem.

A Comprehensive Plan for the Environment

  • 1999 marked the start of a 10-year, $1-billion plan to improve Tampa Electric’s environmental profile
  • Tampa Electric is the first power company in the nation to reach an agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to dramatically reduce emissions
  • The cornerstone of this plan involves the fuel source reconfiguration of coal to natural gas at the H.L. Culbreath Bayside Power Station

Tampa Electric Company Environmental Initiatives

  • The H.L. Culbreath Bayside Power Station generates almost 99 percent less nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide, and more than 85 percent less particulate matter, than before the station’s repowering
  • Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) modification at the Big Bend Power Station we use proven technologies to reduce nitrogen oxides emissions
  • Integrated Coal Gasification Combined-Cycle (IGCC) at Polk Power Station, which uses 15 percent less fuel to create 12 percent more efficient power generation
  • A wide range of emissions controls, like the Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) or “scrubber” system at Big Bend Power Station, are already in place
  • Renewable Energy program
  • Environmental stewardship includes the Manatee Viewing Center and its educational initiatives
