When lightning strikes…strike back!After settling into her new home last June, the last thing Tampa resident Iris Arroyo expected to happen was for it to be hit by lightning.
"Most of my major appliances, and my personal computer, which is an essential way I’m able to conduct my business from home, were damaged," she said.
Arroyo had Tampa Electric’s Zap Cap Systems installed on her home’s electric meter. But the bolt, which entered through a front room instead of through the electrical service entrance, was still able to cause a significant amount of damage, including a blown Zap Cap Systems surge protection strip.
Even though Arroyo was down, she was not out.
That’s because Zap Cap Systems manufacturer stood behind the warranty (up to $100,000) , which pays for lost appliances and electrical equipment. Arroyo was able to replace her computer within three weeks.
"The Tampa Electric Zap Cap Systems professional who came out to my house was wonderful and he kept me updated through the entire claims process," she said. "I was very happy because it was done in a timely manner." Arroyo was so pleased that she decided to purchase additional plug-in strips for added protection. "It was a costly lesson to learn," she said.
"But, you can be sure that the next time, I’ll be ready."
"As I watched a ball of fire move down the power line and straight into my home’s electrical panel, I was sure that my appliances and electronics would be damaged or lost," said Tammi Blackburn, customer service professional–Tampa Electric, as she recounted seeing a fuse on the power line outside her home blow.

The key to the system’s effectiveness is a meter-based unit. It diverts roughly 90 percent of each high-voltage surge entering via a home’s electrical service entrance.
In doing so, it reduces the energy from each high-voltage surge to a level that a standard plug-in protector could handle.
