The sun and the sea go together like…solar panels and Tesla batteries? At The Florida Aquarium in downtown Tampa, that’s a big warm YES!
The aquarium recently opened its 6,000-square-foot rooftop terrace venue space, where we installed unobtrusive state-of-the-art solar panels that can produce 134 kilowatts of electricity. That’s enough electricity to power approximately 18 homes. Complementing the panels are two Tesla Powerwall batteries that store enough energy to power the venue’s louvered shade panels.
The panels and batteries are in addition to the aquarium’s Explore-A-Shore pavilion and its solar array, also provided by Tampa Electric.
“We are extremely appreciative of TECO’s involvement as we strive to make a difference in our community,” said Roger Germann, president and CEO of The Florida Aquarium. “In addition to producing clean, affordable, renewable energy, the new Terrace will serve as an educational opportunity to teach kids about using renewable power.”
The solar innovations are part of Tampa Electric’s and The Florida Aquarium’s mutual desire to promote energy alternatives in the Sunshine State.
“Tampa Electric is committed to clean energy and solar initiatives,” said Tom Hernandez, senior vice president of decarbonization for Tampa Electric. “We’re on track to power more than 200,000 homes with solar by 2023. It’s projects like this in the community, along with our other utility solar projects, that will allow us to achieve that goal and work toward a cleaner energy future.”
When not in use for a private event, the rooftop terrace is open to the public during an aquarium visit. Go SEA for yourself!
