Our Commitment

We are committed to helping our customers and employees take advantage of the latest innovative technologies to balance energy, the environment and economics. By driving an electric vehicle, you can preserve energy sources, save money on fuel and protect the environment. Our goal is to help you make a smooth transition into sustainable transportation. Tampa Electric is already working to make sustainable transportation a reality in the communities we serve.

Electric Vehicle and Energy Education Program

Our Commitment

We are proud to be the first electric utility in the country to offer an innovative energy-education program focused on teaching students about electric vehicle technology. Tampa Electric has partnered with the University of South Florida, the Center for Urban Transportation Research and local high schools to offer the Electric Vehicle and Energy Education Program.

Drive Electric Florida

Our CommitmentWe support Drive Electric Florida's vision to advance the energy, economic and environmental security of the state of Florida by promoting the growth of electric vehicle ownership and accompanying infrastructure. Consider bookmarking Drive Electric Florida's website as a valuable source of information regarding electric vehicle technology and what's happening across the sunshine state.

Tampa Bay Clean Cities Coalition

Our CommitmentThe Tampa Bay Clean Cities Coalition was launched in 2012 through a partnership between Tampa Electric, Peoples Gas, the University of South Florida's Patel School of Global Sustainability and the Environmental Protection Commission of Hillsborough County. With this, the Tampa Bay area joins nearly 100 coalitions across the country to help advance the nation's economic, environmental and energy security by supporting local actions to reduce petroleum consumption in transportation. Workplace Charging Challenge

Our CommitmentTECO Energy, a subsidiary of Emera Inc., signed a pledge to the U.S. Department of Energy to add its name to a growing list of "Workplace Charging Challenge Partners." As a workplace partner, we are providing access to plug-in vehicle chargers for employees – so they can charge their own electric vehicles while at work.

Supporting HART's HyperLINK

Our CommitmentJoining with other community partners, Tampa Electric provided funding to incorporate four Tesla Model X all-electric vehicles into the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit authority's (HART) HyperLINK program. The plug-in electric vehicles will support HART's first-mile, last-mile initiative that takes drivers to and from bus stops in the University of South Florida area. The HART HyperLINK is the first of its kind offered by a transit agency anywhere in the country.

Our Pledge to EEI

Our CommitmentTampa Electric is committed to collaborating with local government and business leaders to ensure the infrastructure and electrical capacity needed to support large-scale growth of electric vehicles is available. In 2009, Tampa Electric and other U.S. utilities pledged to the Edison Electric Institute, the largest trade organization representing investor-owned electric utilities, to focus on the following components to commercialize electric vehicles:

  • Infrastructure – Utilities will help ensure there are no system impacts from fueling large numbers of plug-in vehicles from the power grid. They also will help develop comprehensive local charging infrastructure plans.
  • Customer Support – Utilities will ensure that plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) customers receive excellent customer care on questions ranging from charging mechanics to rates.
  • Customer and Stakeholder Education – Utilities will collaborate with state and local officials, automakers and other stakeholders to provide comprehensive education outreach to customers on all aspects of PEVs.
  • Vehicle and Infrastructure Incentives – Utilities will work closely with federal, state and local stakeholders to encourage PEV penetration, including offering purchase incentives, tax rebates, off-peak charging rates and subsidized parking.
  • Utility fleets – Utilities will take significant steps to accelerate the introduction of PEVs into their utility fleet operations.
