This Independence Day, learn more about the benefits and cost savings of electric vehicles
TAMPA, July 2, 2020
The latest Department of Energy statistics show that the United States consumes more than 20 million barrels of oil per day – nearly half of which is imported – and that nearly 70 percent of it is used for transportation. How can you reduce your dependency on foreign oil at the gas pump? Simple: Use less of it.
The increasing popularity of electric vehicles (EVs) is one solution. EV drivers enjoy quick and smooth acceleration, freedom from the gasoline pump and lower costs for operation and maintenance. At Tampa Electric’s low rates of about 10 cents per kilowatt-hour, driving electric is the equivalent of about $1 per gallon. EVs also provide environmental benefits over traditional fuels, such as gasoline or diesel fuel. Switching to an EV can reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) and carbon dioxide (CO2) by 95 percent.
There are more than 1.5 million electric vehicles on U.S. roads today, and EV sales are forecasted to surpass 3.5 million by 2030.
“It’s encouraging to see so many drivers opting to plug in instead of filling up at the pump,” said Kenneth Hernandez, Tampa Electric’s business development manager. “Electric transportation is a win for our nation, helping to meet customer needs, providing environmental benefits, and supporting America’s energy security.”
