TAMPA, April 6, 1999
Tampa Electric Co. today issued an urgent appeal to customers to sharply reduce their electricity uses. Unusually warm weather statewide during normal maintenance periods for power plants has reduced capacity. Voluntary conservation will help alleviate the power demands.
Tampa Electric is asking all residential and business customers to raise their thermostats 5-10 degrees and to keep thermostat settings constant. The company also recommends that customers leave their refrigerator and freezer doors closed; minimize their use of major appliances; turn off water heaters, if possible and all unnecessary outdoor lighting, as well as pool and sprinkler pump systems; and keep cooking and bathing to a minimum.
The company will also be exercising various load management programs to assist with the conservation.
Tampa Electric said these urgent energy conservation efforts should be continued until the alert is over.
