Tampa Electric offers $1 million in rebates for new solar projects Oct. 1
The company has paid nearly $2 million to customers for new solar installations since April 2011
TAMPA, September 20, 2012
Customers planning to install a new solar photovoltaic (PV) system at their home or business in 2013 may qualify for a rebate from Tampa Electric of $2 per watt – up to $20,000 per project.
Tampa Electric will accept rebate reservations online at tampaelectric.com/solarrebates beginning at 10 a.m. Oct. 1. Rebate funds will top $1 million and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that existing customer-installed PV systems will not qualify for this rebate.
Tampa Electric will connect qualifying systems to the company's electric grid and will provide credits to customers for excess electricity produced by their PV systems.
"Tampa Electric is excited to help our customers realize the benefits of solar power while giving them a way to increase their support for sustainability and the environment," said Gordon Gillette, president of Tampa Electric and Peoples Gas. "Providing solar power rebates for residential and business customers is a logical extension of our commitment to renewable energy that you can see in PV arrays we've installed at schools, the Florida Aquarium, the Museum of Science and Industry and other places – sometimes for educational purposes, sometimes to provide emergency shelter power and in some cases, both."
Since April 2011, Tampa Electric has paid nearly $2 million in rebates for PV systems installed by customers. This has encouraged the installation of over 850 kilowatts of PV on homes and businesses throughout the company's service territory. Annually, this is enough capacity to generate over 1.3 gigawatt-hours of clean, renewable energy. That's enough to power 98 average-sized homes or the equivalent of removing 143 cars from the road. More information about customer-installed systems and net metering is available on the company's Renewable Energy program website at www.tampaelectric.com/renewable.
Also, residential customer rebates up to $1,000 are available for new solar water-heating systems. Tampa Electric customers can register for solar water heating rebates, also available on a first-come, first-served basis, at tampaelectric.com/solarrebates.
Tampa Electric is the only Florida investor-owned electric utility to offer a Renewable Energy program that makes it easy for customers to purchase a portion of their electricity from renewable sources by signing up for $5 blocks of renewable energy. For each block purchased, Tampa Electric distributes 200 kilowatt-hours of renewable energy to the electric grid that serves the community.
