Tampa Electric restoring final outages from Tropical Storm Colin – Alert #2

This is the final alert from the storm, which has been downgraded to an extratropical storm

TAMPA, June 7, 2016

Tampa Electric has restored power to nearly all the customers affected by the torrential rain and high winds of Tropical Storm Colin.

In total, nearly 39,000 Tampa Electric customers were affected by power outages throughout the storm. The peak of the storm was between noon and 1 p.m. Monday, when 12,000 customers lost power. More than 100 out-of-state utility workers supplemented Tampa Electric’s crews to help restore power.

As of 3:30 p.m., more than 99.8 percent of Tampa Electric’s customers had power, with the following weather-related power outages remaining:

  • Hillsborough County: 1,342
  • Pasco County: 3
  • Pinellas County: 13
  • Polk County: 15

Power will be restored to those customers this evening.

Tampa Electric invests more than $55 million annually in a 10-point plan to harden the electric system against severe weather, which includes infrastructure replacement, tree trimming and pole inspections. The company’s year-round preparations enable crews to handle the potential impacts of severe weather and widespread power outages. Tampa Electric’s comprehensive storm plan is in place and crews are ready to help restore power as safely and quickly as possible.

Tampa Electric restores service in priority order. We focus on restoring facilities that are critical to public health and safety, such as hospitals, disaster centers and police and fire stations. Tampa Electric then focuses on repairs that will restore power to the largest number of customers in the shortest possible time.
