Scouts earn their Electricity merit badge while gaining firsthand insight into the electric industry.
When a group of local scouts visited one of our service areas to earn their Electricity merit badge, they left with far more than a credential. The hands-on experience offered behind-the-scenes perspective of electric industry operations, with strong emphasis on safety, training and career pathways.
Like curious young explorers, the scouts were eager to put classroom learning into real-world context. The visit centered on electricity, but it also opened the door to something bigger: a glimpse into the people, practices and possibilities that keep the power flowing safely to homes and businesses.
An Electrifying – and Safe – Look at Energy
Tampa Electric’s Live Line Demonstration Trailer was a big hit with the scouts.
The day began with a highlight – our Live Line Demonstration Trailer, a mobile training unit that showcases electrical safety practices in action. Next came a substation overview that introduced the scouts to how electricity moves from power plants (generation) to homes and businesses (delivery). Then, team members demonstrated linework training techniques on power poles, emphasizing the job’s physical demands and the strict safety protocols that guide every step.
Scouts were introduced to lineworker power pole training techniques.
The curious scouts asked thoughtful questions about the work – and even about how electricity is billed.
“Parents were impressed with the topics and discussions, and several said they learned a great deal about the electric industry – with an emphasis on safety,” said supervisor of technical training, Bill Hendrickson.
Inspiring the Next Generation
After seeing electricity in action, several of the older scouts asked about career opportunities as they considered exploring paths they hadn’t before. We hope their visit will resonate long after the merit badge is earned.
Events like these help connect young people to the realities and possibilities of the energy industry while reinforcing the importance of electrical safety in everyday life. Some of the scouts may one day return – not as visitors, but as part of the team helping to power their communities.
