We're committed to strengthening our grid to ensure it's one of the most reliable and storm-resilient in the nation.

Tampa Electric's Storm Protection Plan (SPP) is a multi-year resiliency initiative that invests millions of dollars annually to provide safe, reliable power to all customers. This future-focused plan matches strategic investments with modern technology to enhance energy resilience in our fast-growing region. To help improve reliability, we're reinforcing power poles and substations, converting overhead power lines to underground and trimming vegetation that can cause outages, resulting in fewer, shorter outages and lower costs.

Since we began implementing SPP in 2020, we've achieved these improvements

  • Reduced the length of an average outage by 27%.
  • Cut momentary outages by 67%.
  • Placed more than 220 miles of overhead power lines underground.
  • Converted nearly 2,500 power poles from wood to steel or concrete.
  • Hardened nearly 4,500 distribution poles.
  • Installed more than 1,000 automation and efficiency devices.
  • Removed more than 3,000 trees that could cause power outages.

These enhancements are the result of intentional data-driven efforts and lessons learned from past storms. During Hurricanes Debby, Helene and Milton, overhead power lines were four times more likely to be damaged and cause power outages than underground lines

Our Storm Protection Plan is a model of efficiency, grounded in careful analysis of the best solutions for our customers. Choose an initiative below to learn how we're becoming more resilient, better prepared and increasingly protected from natural disasters.

Through our Storm Protection Plan, we're delivering more reliable and resilient power to you.
