Tampa Electric Can Help You Cut Energy Costs

National Cut Your Energy Costs Day is Jan. 10, when consumers are encouraged to explore their options to save energy. Tampa Electric can help.

Tampa Electric reduced bills this month – residential bills dropped by about 11 percent – plus there are additional things customers can do to reduce their energy use and save even more:

  • Set your thermostat at 68 degrees or lower when the weather is chilly. Every degree above 68 can add 3 percent to 5 percent to the heating portion of your power bill.
  • Run ceiling fans in occupied rooms only. Set them to rotate clockwise when heating your home.
  • Make sure your windows and doors are weather-tight, with no leaks. Check for daylight around the edges of your door to see if you need new weather stripping.
  • Turn off computers and monitors when not in use. Unplug electronics, gadgets and chargers.
  • Run dishwashers and clothes washers only when they’re full.
  • Lower the temperature setting on your water heater to 120 degrees.
  • Clean or replace air conditioning filters each month. This helps the unit run more efficiently.

As part of the audit, the analysts will provide additional information about other energy-saving programs, including:

  • Prime Time Plus – Now your heating and cooling system, water heater and pool pump (if you have one) can actually save you money. It does this by letting Tampa Electric reduce electricity use during periods of extremely high demand. The average customer saves $144 per year. And, we’ll install a free smart thermostat with an app for added convenience.
  • Energy Planner – Save 8 percent to 10 percent on electricity costs when you participate in Tampa Electric’s free Energy Planner program. Customers who are willing to make minor changes to when they use electricity can benefit by taking advantage of lower rates for electricity that are available 87 percent of the time.
  • Ductwork – A trained professional will seal any leaks in your air conditioning ductwork to help you lower your overall energy consumption. Customers who take advantage of the ductwork program can save up to 20 percent on heating and cooling costs.
  • Ceiling insulation – Poor levels of insulation in your attic will let energy escape, costing you money as well as comfort. After an attic inspection, Tampa Electric can provide a rebate (15 cents per square foot) for upgrading your insulation with a participating contractor.
