Save Energy (and Money!) While You Celebrate the Season

Holiday Cooking

The holiday season is here – a time for cozy gatherings and the mouthwatering aroma of home-cooked favorites filling the house. From juicy ham and roasted turkey to creamy mashed potatoes and decadent desserts, the kitchen truly becomes the heart of the holidays.

But with all that festive cooking, baking and entertaining, your energy use can skyrocket faster than Santa’s sleigh on Christmas Eve. Don’t worry – our energy experts are here to help! We’ve rounded up some simple, smart ways to keep your home merry, bright and efficient all season long.

Cook Smarter, Not Harder

  • Size matters: A 6-inch pot on an 8-inch burner wastes more than 40% of the heat. Use the right-sized cookware to save up to $36 a year on an electric range.
  • Think small (appliances): For reheating leftovers or small dishes, use the microwave or air fryer. Microwaves use about 50% less energy, and air fryers cook faster while using about 65% less energy than a conventional oven.
  • Keep it covered: Lids on pots and pans trap heat, help food cook faster and keep your kitchen from overheating.
  • Fill it up: Baking multiple dishes? Maximize oven space by simultaneously cooking items that require the same temperature – and resist the urge to peek! Every time you open the oven door, the temperature can drop by 25°F.

Keep Your Cool (and Your Savings)

  • Set your freezer between 0°F and 5°F and your fridge between 34°F and 37°F. Going just 10 degrees colder than needed can waste 25% more energy.
  • Let hot leftovers cool before putting them in the fridge – it saves power by helping your appliance work less.

Save Water, Too!

  • Only run your dishwasher when it’s full. Half loads waste twice the water and energy.
  • A dripping hot-water faucet can waste up to 1,660 gallons a year — and around $35 in electricity. A quick fix can make a big difference!

Bonus Tip

If weather cooperates, fire up the grill and take your cooking outdoors! It keeps your kitchen cool and adds a smoky twist to your holiday feast.

With just a few simple changes, you can keep the holiday cheer up and your energy bills down.

Happy holidays from all of us, and may your season be warm, bright and energy-efficient!
