Watch out for misleading solar claims. Tampa Electric does not partner with, endorse or offer special deals through residential solar or battery businesses.
Florida’s abundant sunshine makes solar energy an excellent option for powering your home.
But some solar companies are using high-pressure tactics and false claims to get your business.
We want to be clear: Tampa Electric does not partner with, endorse, or recommend any solar or battery installation companies. We don’t send solar contractors to your door, we don’t authorize them to contact you on our behalf, and we don’t offer “special deals” through them.
At Tampa Electric, we do fully support our customers in exploring solar options that make sense for their rooftops and their wallets. Our net metering policies help many residents generate their own power while staying connected to a reliable grid.
We encourage customers to visit our website’s Solar Education section to learn the basics of solar energy. An informed consumer is less likely to fall victim to false claims.
Solar United Neighbors, a national nonprofit solar advocacy group, advises consumers to watch out for:
- Advertisements designed to look like news stories from trusted media outlets, often featuring images of politicians or government leaders seemingly approving legislation.
- Ads that overstate the initial price of installing solar panels to make financing seem necessary.
- Misleading wording that presents a solar or roof replacement loan as a “special program” backed by a utility or government entity.
- Promotions claiming that “program funds” are available exclusively in your region or for a short, limited period.
- Ads encouraging consumers to provide their address, personal contact details, or utility bill information to “check eligibility.”
- Pushy, door-to-door salespeople who pressure you to sign a solar contract or financing agreement you don’t fully understand.
There are, of course, legitimate local solar companies and installers. With due diligence, you can feel confident knowing you’re working with an honest, transparent company. Be sure to get competing bids from a few solar installers and ask questions to ensure you understand the details of any proposals you receive.
If you have questions about solar or received a suspicious offer, contact us directly at 813-275-3909. We’re here to help.
