Business Deposit Options

All Tampa Electric business and industrial customers are required to provide a security deposit or approved alternative to meet the requirements of our Florida Public Service Commission-approved tariff
for as long as they receive electric service.
The deposit amount is typically based on two times the average monthly electric bill at the service location. Customers can pay the deposit with their first bill or use an approved Surety Bond or Irrevocable Letter of Credit as an alternative. Deposits earn interest and may be reviewed and adjusted based on account history and usage.

Yes, deposits paid by cash, check or credit card earn interest while held by Tampa Electric.

  • Business and industrial deposits earn simple interest at an annual rate of 2%.
  • After 23 months of continuous service, the interest rate increases to 3%.
  • Deposits secured by Surety Bond Form or Irrevocable Letter of Credit Form don't earn interest.
  • Interest is credited annually after 6 months of continuous service.
  • If service is disconnected and the account is closed, the security deposit balance and any accrued interest not already refunded are applied to the final bill; any remaining balance will be refunded to the customer.

Yes, your deposit amount can change. Tampa Electric reviews deposit amounts after an account has been open for one year to ensure the deposit accurately reflects the service location's usage and billing history. This helps ensure the deposit amount remains appropriate and generally aligns with twice the average monthly bill for the service location based on the previous 12 months of usage.

Deposit amounts may also be reviewed periodically based on factors such as payment history, past-due payments, length of service and the current deposit balance on file.

If a review determines that the current deposit amount is no longer sufficient, an additional deposit may be required. Advance notice will be provided before any additional deposit is billed to the account.

If an account review determines that a higher deposit is required, Tampa Electric will provide advance notice before the additional deposit is billed to the account.

If a deposit review determines that the amount on file is more than required, the excess deposit amount may be refunded or credited to the account, as applicable.

When an account is closed, the security deposit balance and any accrued interest are applied to the final bill. If the deposit and accrued interest exceed the amount owed, any remaining credit balance will be refunded to the customer.

Yes. Tampa Electric may review your security deposit requirement based on payment history, including past-due payments and patterns of late payment.

If a review determines that the current deposit amount is no longer sufficient, an additional security deposit may be required. Factors considered may include payment history, length of service and the current deposit balance on file.

If an additional deposit is required, advance notice will be provided before it is billed to the account.
