Celebrate Independence from the Gas Pump with an Electric Car

This Independence Day, learn more about the benefits and cost savings of electric vehicles

This week, as Americans celebrate their independence from Britain, it’s time to consider declaring independence from something else: The American gas pump. You can do this by driving an electric vehicle (EV).

Nearly 3.8 million EVs have been sold in the U.S., and Florida ranks 2nd in the nation for new EV sales. With Tampa Electric’s rates of about 14 cents per kilowatt-hour, you can drive an EV for the equivalent of about $1.38 per gallon. EVs also provide environmental benefits over traditional fuels, such as gasoline or diesel. Switching to an EV can reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) and carbon dioxide (CO2) by 95 percent.

“With more vehicle options, increased driving range, and the flexibility to charge just about anywhere, many of our customers are choosing an EV as their next vehicle,” said Kenneth Hernandez, Tampa Electric’s business development manager. “With such a low operating cost and almost no maintenance requirements, we’re seeing increased interest from our residential customers – and commercial fleet customers as well.”

Worried about whether an EV can take you to all the places you want to go? There are more than 7,500 charging ports at nearly 3,000 convenient locations across Florida, and Tampa Electric is installing 200 charging ports as part of our Drive Smart® program. With more charging sites currently being developed, long-distance EV travel is becoming easier.

Visit TampaElectric.com/EV for information on the types of vehicles available in today’s market, charging options, cost savings and environmental benefits. Later this summer, Tampa Electric will launch a new website to include an EV savings calculator, available tax credits, tips on installing and locating chargers, the benefits of switching to an all-electric fleet, FAQs and more.

Electric vehicles play a role in our clean energy future. Tampa Electric has a vision for net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Tampa Electric, one of Florida’s largest investor-owned electric utilities, serves more than 800,000 customers in West Central Florida. Tampa Electric is a subsidiary of Emera Inc., a geographically diverse energy and services company headquartered in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.
