Cody Johnson, a single dad, wanted a better life for himself and his two-and-a-half-year-old son. So he jumped at the chance to enroll in the inaugural class of Hillsborough Community College’s Electrical Line Worker Training Program, sponsored by Tampa Electric.

“It will definitely bring me and my son to a different level in life,” Cody said.

Tampa Electric was thrilled to partner with the college to create the program, construct a training yard and provide instructors. The four-month curriculum gives qualifying students the chance to learn fundamental skills needed to become a line worker trainee in the electric utility industry. Tampa Electric initially pledged more than $300,000 for scholarships and program equipment.

The scholarships help folks like Cody pursue their dreams.

“If it wasn’t for TECO, and the paid tuition, I don’t think I’d be here right now,” Cody said.

On December 12, we celebrated the thirteen men who graduated from the program’s inaugural class – making it through boot camp, hands-on instruction and old-fashioned studying!

Speaking to fellow students and guests at the graduation ceremony, Joshua Murray said the Tampa Electric scholarship “was huge.”

“This was everything that I needed to pursue the dream of becoming a lineman. I definitely appreciate HCC and TECO for all your efforts and hard work in making this possible for everyone that’s here graduating today.”
