ACTION! Sligh Middle School students will soon enjoy new video production equipment.
It’s elementary: We’re proud to back local teachers and their great ideas to enhance education!
What can local teachers do when they have innovative ideas that require spending beyond a typical school budget? They can apply for grants from the Hillsborough Education Foundation (HEF), a nonprofit dedicated to strengthening public education.
Tampa Electric, a HEF community partner, funds teacher grants that align with our commitment to empower students to learn and flourish.
And this is the fun part – we get to visit classrooms with donations that cover the costs of the selected projects.
“Visiting a school with a check in hand to fulfill a teacher’s wish for their students is a highlight of my year,” says Julie Ward, Tampa Electric’s community investment manager.
In November, Julie made surprise donations at three Tampa schools: Alexander Elementary School, Lomax Elementary Magnet School and Sligh Middle School.

Alexander Elementary School received funding for a student recognition program.
At Alexander Elementary School, Tampa Electric surprised fifth grade teacher Selena Sena with a donation to fund her “Tag, You’re It!” student recognition project. Her initiatives will acknowledge students with stellar behavior, as incentives are shown to have a positive effect on grades and demeanor.
Lomax Elementary School got a boost to its robotics program.
At Lomax Elementary School, we surprised the robotics instructor, Sarah Henix, with a donation that will enhance the school’s robotics program and elevate the students’ hands-on learning experience. Tampa Electric is committed to supporting STEAM initiatives (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) in education, and this project certainly fit the bill!

Sligh Middle School staff were thrilled to receive funding for new video equipment.
We surprised Sligh Middle School teacher Toni Kuzmicki with funding for new video production equipment to boost the school’s media class. Media students produce videos and a daily morning show, building skills that will take them through life and create a zest for learning.
By joining forces with educators, we’re not just supporting classrooms – we’re helping shape brighter futures for every student and community we reach.
Our support comes from shareholder funds and does not affect customer bills.
