Supporting the Dream: Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through celebration and a scholarship

The Dr. Martin Luther King Parade Foundation’s Black-Tie Gala and parade are both powerful reminders of Dr. King’s lasting impact on our community.

Tampa Electric is proud to participate in the MLK Day parade, sponsor the gala and present the Martin Luther King Most Improved Student Award. This year, that award went to Cameron Gaines of Tampa Bay Technical High School.

Cameron overcame extraordinary early challenges – he was born at 26 weeks, survived a stroke and persevered through years of therapy and academic hurdles. He emerged as a leader, serving as Sergeant-at-Arms and President of Tampa’s Men of Vision non-profit organization, while completing more than 421 hours of community service.

Cameron believes success is defined not by how easy the road is, but by the willingness to keep walking.

Julie Ward, Tampa Electric’s community investment manager, was honored to present the award to Cameron.

"Honoring a student’s growth and supporting him on his journey means so much and speaks to what matters most at Tampa Electric," Julie said. “Our community’s future is brighter because of young people like Cameron.”
