MacDill Power Station came online in 2025. It's a collaboration between Tampa Electric and MacDill Air Force Base that allows Tampa Electric to generate power on the base, providing energy resiliency for all Tampa Electric customers.

The initiative helps meet the needs of the growing region and provides several critical benefits.

  • The additional power generating capability further insulates customers from the impacts of extreme hot and cold weather, which can temporarily increase electricity demand beyond the available supply.
  • The small size and agility of this power plant allow Tampa Electric to provide a quick and efficient energy boost to the grid as a complement to intermittent energy sources like solar, which can be interrupted by cloud cover and at night.
  • Using this nimble system to address upward fluctuations in energy demand allows Tampa Electric’s larger power stations to operate more efficiently, reducing carbon emissions across the company’s portfolio of power generating stations.
  • The power plant can serve as back-up energy source for MacDill Air Force Base in times of emergency, supporting safety and continuity of military operations.
